For years I’ve wanted to get a picture of a combine working the base of Steptoe Butte and have it fully leveled, with the right light, and minimal dust in the air. Tonight as the sun was close to the horizon, the opportunity presented itself, thanks to Nate Klaveano, who is driving his John Deere 9770-STS equipped with Hanson (formerly RAHCO) leveler in the top picture. At the same time there were two more combines in the field.
The Palouse has a very unique topography. The soil is rich, and rains adequate, but it requires specially modified equipment to farm, hence the self-leveling combines that evolved over the decades.
I took a lot of good pictures today, here are 3 of my favorites.
